DICTIONARY OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES
SERBIAN – ENGLISH – GERMAN
Dictionary of library and information sciences encompasses the terminology of theory and practice of librarianship and information sciences and wide range of close or related fields, in Serbian, English and German languages. The languages in this dictionary have equal status.
Online version momentarily includes:
  • 40.000 entries (appr. 14.000 in Serbian, 12.400 in English and 14.000 in German);
  • 900 definitions and explanations of terms accepted by contemporary library standards;
  • 2.300 acronyms for international and national entities;
  • 190 links to relevant Web sites.
  • Purpose of the Dictionary

    The intention of this dictionary is to be the useful electronic resource of information for professionals in library and information sciences, for scientists and students, as well as for library users with different interests. Our aim is to help and promote:
  • information and knowledge interchange within library society;
  • efficient usage of bibliographic data bases;
  • better understanding of library related texts;
  • usage of electronic resources on the Internet;
  • evolution of library terminology, particularly in Serbian.
  • Contents of the Dictionary

    The Dictionary contains concepts in following subject fields:
  • core area: collection planning and development, bibliographic description and content analysis, classifying and indexing, thesauri compilation, documents and information storage, search and retrieval techniques, dissemination of documents and information, user services, library personnel, equipment and space;
  • marginal areas: archive science, bibliography, graphic arts, history of book and writing, publishing, book trade, bookbinding, printing and reprography, preserving, conservation and restoration methods, linguistics and terminology work, management, advertizing;
  • computer and communication: electronic resources, information products and services, information systems, telecommunication and networking, the Internet, mass communications, electronic data processing, hardware, software;
  • legal aspects of information and documentation: copyright, intellectual and industrial property preservation, data protection, right to information.
  • Selection of terms

    The terms gathered originate from the plethora of relevant sources: high valuated library texts, dictionaries and lexicons, bibliographic standards as well as recently adopted terminology standards.
    The criteria for inclusion of any term was that there was a reasonable supposal that library and information professional may be expected to encounter it in practice, or that he/she will be required to know, or recognize, its meaning in the course of executing his/ her responsibilities as a librarian/information professional.

    Acronyms

    The list contains acronyms frequently used in library environment. Acronyms name organisations and associations, institutions and networks, projects and initiatives, programs and software packages, bibliography standards and guidelines, phrases and technical terms. The abbreviated and full forms are given in their original language. For frequently used acronymes the accepted forms in Serbian or translations are given as well.

    Along the compilation of the Dictionary a great number of conventional and electronic resources has been consulted. The following list includes a selection of the most important printed as well as online accessible sources.
